I knew straight away that I would become friends with the Germans.
I did not only speak their language; I also understood their nature and their sense of order.
At the same time, I recognised myself in the Italians.
Their zest for life and warmth were familiar to me; joy and cordiality were in my nature.
At that moment, it became clear to me that I did not just master both languages.
I carried two homelands within me.
